Last Years Recap
Peace Corps Week 2025 brought together individuals with a shared passion for service and global engagement. From February 24 to March 1, the Peace Corps Prep Program and the Paul D. Coverdell Fellowship Program hosted an inspiring celebration of international service and community engagement. This week featured events designed to inform, connect, and inspire students, alumni, and prospective volunteers.
History
The Peace Corps, one of President John F. Kennedy’s signature achievements, was officially established in 1961 to promote peace and friendship through volunteer service around the world. Its origins trace back to an impromptu late-night speech in 1960 at the University of Michigan, where then-Senator Kennedy challenged students to dedicate themselves to global service. The overwhelming enthusiasm that followed inspired the creation of the Peace Corps soon after he took office.
Present
Peace Corps continues to foster global connection and collaboration through community driven service. More than 240,000 Americans have completed missions in over 140 countries, working side by side with local partners to build sustainable solutions in education, health, agriculture, and youth empowerment. Embracing innovation, inclusivity, and resilience, the Peace Corps now combines traditional service with virtual engagement addressing modern challenges like climate change, equity, and digital access.
Future
Building on six decades of service, the agency will expand its impact through hybrid and digital programs, empowering Volunteers to support communities even more effectively. With a focus on climate action, equity, and youth leadership, the Peace Corps aims to address tomorrow’s global challenges while fostering mutual understanding and cultural exchange. Its vision remains clear: to inspire generations of Americans and communities worldwide to collaborate, learn from one another, and create lasting positive change.
